Dear Tories,
I know you won. No one is more sorry than me.
One of the ways you won was by building a good relationship with the media.
Slagging Jane Taber and referring to her as the Canadian fog machine is not a good way to maintain that relationship.
Suggesting that the national wire service, Canadian Press, is biased because they don't recycle selected quotations condemning the gun registry from Greg McGreg McCullagh, head of the Saskatchewan Chiefs of Police Association in 1995 for a story this week is also, uhm, unproductive.
Neither Jim Bronskill nor Jane Taber were born yesterday.
Take it from people who know what it is to take a beating from the media during a campaign.
Take it easy.
You're in government on Monday. Start acting like it.
We are not making this up.

Considering the relative free ride the Tories received this time around (and admittingly that it was the reverse in '04), shouldn't they be kissing the feet of giant media conglomerates everywhere? When was the last time an Asper paper -- never mind virtually a whole massive chain -- endorsed the Conservatives so wholeheartedly? What about essentially ignoring stories (like here in Vancouver where the 'Sun' published a positive pic of Richmond Tory candidate Daryl Reid at a gathering of other parties candidates in support of head tax redress -- Reid was shown at the microphone and the cutline implied that he was among the group endorsing the call for an apology. Yet the real story went unreported but caught by a few news cameras, that Reid was actually the only candidate of those there who refused to sign a petition and was soundly booed by the crowd, likely costing him a few votes. Despite this 'favour' by the Sun editors, Reid's campaign manager would later blame 'the jewish-controlled media' for costing his client the election.

Re: gun control, and how it has been a successful tool for law enforcement around the country. Tories still are angry about having 'their guns taken away' (a bit of a fabrication on their parts, as the right to bear arms isn't in our charter). We can agree that the cost of this program is beyond the pale, but why has the media for the most part allowed the Tories to dictate this issue? It was originally designed as a response to tragedies like the Montreal Massacre and Vernon wedding party killings. Neither perpetrator was a criminal prior to their infamous acts. This program was not going specifically directed at criminals from accessing illegal weapons but it was hoped it would also catch some of those... It was designed to prevent primarily spousal and temporary insanity homicides, the guy who goes to work and starts shooting. Tories want those people (96% of whom are angry white males, the demographics for Stephen Harper, by the way) to be armed and ready. If he repeals this law and allows the NRA's dream to be a Canadian reality, here's hoping that the only ones in the crosshairs are Tory-supporting angry males...
